I have decided that I’d like to start a new Christmas “tradition” at my house… but I’m not sure what I want to do or what I want to make…
It’s all been spurred on by the fact that my daughter, now firmly planted in her 2nd year of life (headed toward the big 3) is mentally-capable of remembering things (or so I think, at times…). And she’s soooooooo loving the new Christmas Tree that we set up.
Inevitably, the “santa” thing comes up (is that a “tradition” to some of you?) but I’m pretty sure where I stand on that. So, what else could my “new tradition” be?
What are yours?
We have enjoyed going to the mountains and getting a Christmas tree up there. We take a trip with Asher's grandparents, grab lunch on the way and try to make a day of it.
We also take a night and go see the Clark Griswalds around town. That is fun for the little man. We also do the gingerbread house building with Ashe. We started that last year. He ended up eating more candy than we put on the house, but it was a fun time.
Those are a few off of the top of my head.
sweet. we're thinking of taking some "trips"… to be decided!
In my family we have a couple of traditions that have lasted all of these years. My favorite though is that every year we get a new ornament. That way, when I have a family of my own one day then I will have enough ornaments to decorate my tree. Plus, it's a fun way to commemorate an event from that year. For example, when I went to college, I got an ornament with my college name on it. We also like hallmark ornaments because they have series. My series has been going on for 20+ years.
my parents did this to an extent… great reminder.!!!
christmas pajamas… every christmas eve santa brings my kids new pj's they are left at the front door with a note that tells the kids that they need to get ready for bed because he's coming to the house but can't until they are asleep. it's fun to see them run to the door and get excited.
hahaha. that's sweet!
hahaha. that's sweet!
I just recently have been following your blog (our third child was born in Jeju-do, S. Korea and made our family complete 4 years ago). I am thrilled for you and your brother!
We choose not to do Santa but we do tell the kids about St. Nicholas and his story.
We read a devotional every night..right now we are reading Jotham's Journey (for older children–7 and up maybe). We have an advent wreath too. We also give our kids new ornaments in their stockings–usually having to do with something they like or are doing that year. They each have a nice box to put them all in and when they leave the house, they will bring thier boxes with them.
We do "Secret Angel" starting 12 days before Christmas. Everyone picks a name and keeps it secret. I leave out a big box full of candy, cards, post-its, craft stuff and every day the secret angel is supposed to do something for the other person. Sometimes it's a post-it w/ an encouraging note in a shoe or candy under your pillow. Names are revealed Christmas day. We also decorate a gingerbread house together.
Have fun making new traditions!!

wow, this is great. i'm going to share this with sue…
Going to a tree farm and picking out a tree as a family could be fun.
We just started that this year (though we don't have children yet).
We have the same Christmas Breakfast every year. A real simple, yet delicious, breakfast casserole.
I still look forward to that every time I get to spend Christmas Day with my parents.
definitely. my 'rents are coming in in a few days…
We have started a tradition that embraces Jesus when putting up our tree. The Christmas tree is the "Tree of Life" which is "wrapped in light", just like Jesus. On it we hang attributes of God, and under it, we place our gifts, at the feet of Christ, so that since He gave to us, we give to Him by giving to others.
i've started reading a children's bible to roenne this week. started in genesis… maybe should skip to the end with jesus… hehe.
My tradition until this year has been to eat pork-pie for breakfast on Christmas day. I have a feeling the wife won't be allowing that one to happen………..
.. snap.
My parents had little money their first Christmas together. Ice storms had claimed the electricity. By kerosene lantern they shared turkey sandwiches and drank ginger ale.
This has been our Christmas Eve tradition for my entire life. Simple yet filled with memories.
ginger ale still rocks.!
I've got a 2 year old, too. Our favorite tradition is Advent calendars! I think we have about 4. We might be a little overboard…
gosh, can't remember the last calendar i rocked… i'll ahve to ask sue.
We are doing a Jesse tree this year with our 3.5-year-old. He is really into it! We used these devotions and ornament patterns: http://www.rca.org/Page.aspx?&pid=1628&sr…
oOoOoOooOoOh
i think any tradition built around food is GREAT
although my family has started opening presents on christmas eve. mainly b/c we are impatient, but also because we like sleeping in on christmas morning
i also brought over some british christmas traditions from when i was over there, so i make mulled wine and banoffee pie every year. the pie isn't very christmas-y but i just like it.
sleeping ah. how could you with presents awaiting…?
The biggest thing as a family is just spending time together. The gift giving isn't so big but just to be thankful to be around your family on that day. I just think about the nativity scene…nothing comfortable about the setting of a rickety barn except that Jesus and his family were there together.
definitely chris! we'll be doing that.
