Best Things Come in 3's and 7's… I Think.

January 12, 2010

I took a 3 day break from blogging here on my personal blogspot and I’m happy to say that I’m still alive and my conscience is clean.

And the best thing is that I didn’t stress about it nearly as much as I thought I would. Booya.

I didn’t think I’d be able to, especially with some of the very cool things happening but I honestly needed just a few days to get things back into perspective. In addition, over the last 3 days I’ve come up with 7 “things” that I’d like to get done for 2010; in fact, I borrowed them completely from North Point‘s value system:

  1. Biblical Authority – Are my priorities consistent with Scripture?
  2. Intimacy with God – Is my relationship with God growing?
  3. Relevant Environments – Are the environments I’m creating appealing, engaging, and helpful?
  4. Relational Evangelism – In whom am I investing in?
  5. Authentic Community – Am I in a small group?
  6. Strategic Service – Where am I serving?
  7. Intentional Apprenticing – Who am I apprenticing?

Again, I’m not big into resolutions or anything like that, but these are great because they are not only healthy for me as an employee but also extremely important for me personally.

I’ve decided (and it didn’t take me too long to commit, at least in my head) that I’m going to pursue these things this year.

My favorite thing is that none of them are necessarily related to anything web-related or technology.

Wow.

Anyone want to help keep me “accountable?”

  1. doh – now i have to delay my 7-point goal list based on my church's 7 values, or people will think l I'm copying you :-(

  2. Sounds like you are looking for a mentor?
Which would help in all of these areas.
    Definitely something we all need.

  3. looks like you've picked off a few things from Piper's blog and a couple other mainstream bloggers. blog-hack. repost

  4. Were any of these items aspects of your life that you were intentional about last year? Or is this all new?

#7 seems like something you'd already have going. Kind of from the mindset of replicating yourself at your position at NP, and all that.

Or I could be wrong ;)

  6. I really enjoyed this post. My Wife and I were talking about a similar topic and your other post about goal setting ( weekly, etc ).

I'm at a point in my walk where God is Calling me up so to speak. I tend to spread myself too thin seeking ways to serve God and discover purpose etc. Realized I need to simplify. I have some core commitments that I need to stick to.

Tying this into your post – I found myself getting caught up trying to use my talents as a hybrid web developer to spread God's Word. Doesn't sound so bad – but I realized I started feeling the lure of what that means in our creative industry. It means thinking you could start the next big social thing. It means that you are thinking of numbers instead of souls.

I can't focus on how many, or how cool – I just need to put stuff online and let God do the Calling.

I'm facing some big life choices and now is not the time for me to start muddying things up.

I would like to keep you accountable, and for you to keep me accountable – don't know if I'm qualified. If nothing else maybe we could check on each other from time to time.

Trying to be faithful in a few things,

  7. I like that seven-point evaluation a lot. I've been creating a workshop I'll be giving next month at a conference to soon-to-graduate college students on how to make it through that transition. These are some excellent areas to focus on.

  10. My friend said I should check out your blog because you have great content. He says I remind him of you. I think he really wants to say, "This is a cool Pac-Rim-ish guy and you're a cool Pac-Rim-ish guy – you should be friends. " Thanks Jordan. http://www.jordanchez.com/

Anyway, a good first post to stumble upon – good fodder for wife chat. Thanks!

  11. Don't confine authentic community as your small group… it's WAY bigger than that

  12. Great list, man. You said that these items aren't related to technology, but I believe if you excel in these areas, your calling in technology will excel as well. Sewing in God reaps in all areas of life, even the ones we often miss. This list convicted me to look at my life as well. Thanks for sharing.

  13. I'm sorry I can't help in making sure you follow these. I am having a hard time keeping me as well.

i like the first and the second one!
