Family First.

myfamily

One of the most significant takeaways from the first day of Catalyst was this: Family.

It’s strange; I wonder if most people when they think about leadership they think first to family. Unfortunately I’ve not been the model husband nor father, and when I say “yes” to things it means that I say “no” to my family.

Reggie Joiner cut me to the quick with his talk about family when he described how he had, in a moment of emotion, abandoned his post as a father after an argument with his youngest daughter.

We need to fight for our families.

We can’t run from our duties. We can’t avoid our families due to business or “ministry.” They must come first, or they will be the first to be forgotten.

  1. Thanks for posting this! Many of us need to be reminded of this & his story was great. Enjoy day 2!

  2. Obligatory contraversial comment:

I wonder how many people, in the excitement of everything-Catalyst, have abandoned their families just to be there?

  3. Thank you for capturing this conference highlight in a post. I, too, am guilty of not putting my family first. Truthfully, the only reason they ended up in last place was because that was the only place left for them to be. Thank God for forgiveness; thank God for second chances.

  4. I think it is probably related to some of the comments I heard about Rob Bell's talk too (since I am not there). We sometime are more by doing less. Doing less stuff allows for us to be more to our family, which then is actually more in the long run. Sabbath really is for family and a lack of Sabbath, at least for me, means that I am much less connected to family.

  5. SOO excited about this!!

Andy Stanley's Cheating the Church – NOT your family got me thinking a while back.

    Brilliant point.

  6. He cut me quick too and I don't even have a wife or kids. I do know that the "always have to work lifestyle" I have now will do me no good if God blesses me with a wife and kids. Also to hear Rob Bell with Observing the Sabbath hit home too. So much to process from Catalyst!
