I’ve been told a billion times that it’s worth the investment to buy a decent DSLR camera and some nice glass; it’s just taken me about 5 years to finally go in and get one.
Best Investment Ever.
My Canon Rebel EOS T1i with a 50mm 1.4 lens is perhaps the best technological investment that I’ve ever made and the scary thing is that I barely even know how to use the thing!
The pictures I’ve gotten are the best quality that I’ve ever captured in my entire life (I’m one step above full-automatic settings on the camera, btw…) and my only regret is that I didn’t get one sooner.
Again, I’m a complete newbie with photography, but from what I’ve been able to “do” so far makes me smile. I’m glad I now have a decent piece of equipment to capture those valuable memories.
Here’s a few more from our trip to Hilton Head including 3 HD videos I’ve taken. These are right from the flash drive with no post-processing, which means that they could probably look even better (wow…!).
My favorite ones are when I luckily got her in mid-air running, when Sue and Roenne are walking (nearly exactly identical gates), and Sue’s gargantuan smile.

If you’re even considering jumping into the DSLR market just do yourself a favor and do it; you won’t regret it. A lot of people recommended the Nikon D90 (which looks great too) but my Canon Rebel EOS T1i is the freaking bomb.

Yeah, one step above full auto. Right. There's talent in them thar jeans… great eye! Of course, you've got great subjects!
Man those are awesome shots! Wow. Video rocks too. How much was the rig with lens?
about 1,100 or so?
Looks like somebody's been using my Av mode advice!
Honestly, I didn't expect a Rebel to pull off that narrow of a depth of field. But the results speak for themselves. Very professional!!!
Actually, the narrow DOF is a testament of the lens. A big aperture helps tremendously, which is big advantage to prime (non-zoom) lenses. Zoom lenses are great for convenience, but hands down, image quality goes to the primes.
agreed!
Actually, the size of the image sensor is a key factor too. I use a f/1.8 prime lens with a 5D and get even shallower depths of field. I'm just surprised a non-full-frame sensor has such good results.
haha. none of that made any sense to me… i've got a 1.4 prime… i think.
thanks bill! i'm just getting started. pretty excited about it.
These photos are rockin John. Could you put what kind of settings you are using or Bill could you email me some advice on how to get the photos John is getting? benlemery@gmail.com
Thanks!
i'm on AV mode, just as bill suggested… and messing with the f-stops… i think they are called.
dude… I just got a gently used Nikon D40x! Seriously one of my best purchases too!!! That photo I sent you of the water on the keyboard was my first attempt at novice photog creativity. For those of you who aren't human3rror… here's the photo –> http://bit.ly/12YuLM
I'm gonna start a photoblog page. Got any good WP themes for photoblogs?
i'm actually prepping to build one… but there are a lot out there already.
haha. of course you are!

Nice work with the camera, you have a good eye. Do you just have the 50mm, or did you get the kit lens as well?
I got a kit lens too… but I was told to just rock the 50mm…
You can't go wrong w/ a 50mm. The one you have is probably one of the best ranked lenses for Canon, even at it's fairly low price point.
Your child is ridiculously photogenic. But I think you've heard me say that before. Awesome work, dude. Cool baby Roe and Mama-Roe look great!

tada!
great stuff man. pretty soon you'll be charging $$$ for pics and putting me out of business.
dude. whatever…!
Ugh man. I'm going to have to stop coming here it's too tempting!! Maybe after we finish paying off our current credit card we can flop this on there…NO WAIT…see there it is again!
Great pics and great stuff man. I'll continue to live vicariously through you
Which brand did you end up for your prime lens? for those not in the know refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_lens (I did) Did you also get a zoom lens too?
i got a canon 50mm f1.4. it's great…! i got a basic kit lense too.
Dude – these are great! I have a D40 that does great work also! (and will save folks a little money)
Great job on the pics!
these are beautiful!!!!! aren't you so glad you got the 50mm soo soo worth the depth of field !!
thanks for your help with picking it out!
Thanks for the advice, I’ve been on the hunt as of late!
If you had to do it all over again, would you still get the same camera? I think I might finally be in the market for a dslr and wanted to get your opinion.
i love it. would get a canon again.
Cool, thanks.
