Killing Cockroaches is Like Popping Zits

March 3, 2009

picture-2I remember when I was in High School I had some major acne at one point.

I was that kid.

I had to get prescription medicine to handle that junk. It didn’t help that I was super active in sports. Apparently sweating and one’s face didn’t mix too well.

But before I went all crazy and got the meds I just simply popped them. I would get up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror and see what the Lord has graciously bestowed upon me so that he could keep me humble.

I’d zero in on one that was “ripe” for the popping, carefully position my fingers, and then squeeze.

*POP!*

picture-1Ah… that brief moment of satisfaction followed by the thrill of success and a job well done. The problem was that it usually was a tad bit painful and typically left an even bigger mark on my already busted face.

That’s kinda like Tony Morgan’s new book Killing Cockroaches: A brief moment of satisfaction followed by a painful slap in the face and a little residue to carry the idea through the rest of the day.

I’m not exactly sure if what I just shared with you will convince you to actually buy the book (or give it a passing glance) but let me assure you that’s it’s a good read.

It’s at least worth the spot next to that Martha Stewart mag next to your toilet when you go number 2.

Just kidding, it’s better than that. “Juicy” insights about practical ministry that’ll give you something to chew on.

It’s scary to think that Tony thinks a lot like I do, and even scarier to believe that he may actually have the same kind of humor.

I especially like the “Killed by Ninjas?” short piece. I dunno why. He’s got cool titles like that all over the book… just like the title to this blog post.

Puaha.

[Just in case, to make sure I catch any and all "doubters"... the fact that this blog post was written does in fact mean that I endorse this book... I can't believe I just had to type that...]

  1. I would say nice review man, but that made me a little squeamish, more so than the cockroaches :)

Great book though, am almost half way through at this point.

  2. ok, this might be my most favorite "endorsement" so far.

  3. should have titled the book, "Popping Zits by Tony Morgan, Blackheads foreword by Andy Stanley" :)

  4. This has to be – by far – the most interesting book review I have ever read! I tend to skip/skim over book reviews because they tend to be – should I say it – a bit boring and unimaginative. This one makes me want to go in the next room and pick the book up off my husband's desk and read it!

  5. that first picture made me throw up in my mouth a little.

  6. i have a 13 year old son who has minor acne. Some of his buddies, man, they've got it bad. One of them needs to either wash his face, stop eating candy, or wear a mask until he's 18.
    Good review. I might p/u a copy.
