I had the pleasure of hanging out with Rhett (@rhetter) and his family at Highland Park Presbyterian this morning. Some great worship and fellowship was had by all.
One of the neatest things was what the youth did during their service: They were challenged to nail their selfish desires and anything that was keeping that from Jesus to a wooden cross during the last worship song.
I was impressed, and I hope that their courage to pound some nails in front of everyone will carry them for the rest of their lives… because the Faith depends on our youth and their faith to continue on. I personally do not think we invest as much as we need to in the young men and women of our congregation.
My prayer tonight is for them.

That's very cool. I hope grace and forgiveness were also covered. I have run http://teensagainstporn.comfor 4 years now and I can tell you that guilt is amplified when failures follow one of these "tangible exercises." They are still significant and I think it is a terrific idea. But I can't help but also think of the other paths that follow these moments of significance.

One time visiting a pastor friend out of town at his church, he had us all nail a sin to the crossd up front. There is something powerful in a worship service when you do something like that, and think about Jesus being nailed to the cross because of your (yes you, not just someone else) sins.

i remember doing something similar at north point during 722. we didnt nail it to a cross, but we all put it into a jar(?) and burned it…. visited Sue and Roey yesterday. love seeing them

I would be very cautious to give hammers and nails to our youth church…. hahaha
yeah… didn't think about that.
