How Do You Come Up with Ideas? What Does it Look Like?

Ideas are awesome.

Hope you guys are having a great week and looking forward to a restful weekend!

Here’s another Blog Post Jump Starter…!

If you need some inspiration or an idea to blog about here’s a provocative question to consider:

How do I come up with ideas? What does it look like? tweet

Sometimes we don’t ever take a moment and analyze how we uniquely come up with ideas. It’s fascinating because you can learn a lot about yourself as you begin to process through it.

Spend some time today and not only think about it but also write about it! Love to know your thoughts and hear how you come up with ideas!

I need some waterproof pens and paper, because most of my ideas hit me square in the face while I’m in the shower. By the time I get out, I have forgotten half of what I just thought of…

      hehe.

I wished I had a patter for ideas and writing… man, that would make life easier!

i sometimes have to make them up.

Just found an awesome note taking app that functions like my mind… and it’s a mind mapping app for your phone. Awesome app. I downloaded it and just love it’s features so far.

It’s called Freemind. You can have a version for your laptop/desktop, and your phone. It cloud syncs, which equals sweetness. In order to use the cloud sync, you have to download the TS – Cloud Module.

And it’s free. I’m using an android htc EVO. Works fantastic. I have a feeling that note taking is going to take on a totally new level.

thanks! i’m going to check it out.

          • Jonathan Woodward

Correction: the app is Thinking Space, the desk/lap top version is Freemind. They sync together wonderfully.

I think it’s Life for me.

I just live and am – then I can create based upon what is happening in my life or around me!

    • http://john.do John Saddington

really? there’s not a specific method or pattern of events that help create new ideas?

      • http://www.geekforhim.com Matthew Snider

Not really John. I have no real pattern to follow. I write about what is on my heart.

If a topic comes to mind I will write it down and focus on and think about it for a few days. Maybe even a week or more. I find that if I write to quickly I will leave some of my thoughts and feelings about that topic out.

Its good to pre-write as long as possible. It will add quality and quantity to your writing.

    • Joseph

Also, in thinking about a specific topic for a few days or a week or two. I find that other ideas tend to come of that topic.

Just a couple of my thoughts. :)

      • http://john.do John Saddington

and do you write on those?

    • http://john.do John Saddington

      ah. pre-writing… i try this… i don’t do much of it though.

Where do ideas come from? That’s a tough question to answer. I get ideas from things that I’m reading (books, magazines, newspapers, other blogs, Scripture). Sometimes, ideas are triggered by conversations that I have with people. But, I can’t blame others for some of my ideas, especially the satire and sarcasm.

Often, when I get an idea, I’ll jot it down in a post and save it as draft. That will give me time to think about it before coming back to the post to finish it. Plus, since I jotted it down, I won’t forget it later.

where do you jot it down?

    • Jeremy Myers

Hey Alan, good to see you here.

I journal. I have Evernote with me everywhere and I have a Moleskine. I get ideas all of the time, but not all of them make the cut for writing. I write down whatever comes to mind and then I try to organize my thoughts. Some ideas connect and become 1 or a series of posts. Others are stand alones.

When I am looking for ideas, I read other blogs, do random searches on google. Image searches work great too. Just be careful what you search for. I shuffle my Itunes and sometimes I find inspiration in music. I will also pray about what God maybe wants me to write about.

But my process is to collect, organize, and develop.

Maybe I’m unusual, but I don’t have a problem at all coming up with things to write about. I can’t write fast enough to keep up with the ideas! I guess that’s a combination of choosing a niche that you’re passionate about and a niche that’s large enough for many ideas to be formed.

The key is to carry input devices with you everywhere (I use a pad and pen in my pocket).

Then as far as deciding what to write about, I simply review my growing stack of ideas. Ideas that I want to write about in the next few weeks, I move from my large stack to a file folder. Then, when it’s time to think about what to write next, I check the file folder.

loren… love that you carry pad and pen……! so do i!

That’s a great idea on what to write about. I find ideas from looking around me and just writing about something. Prayer helps too.

    • Jonathan Woodward

      Prayer… What an idea!

        wah wah!

prayer does help…. this is a great reminder. thanks!

    Hi John:

Great questions. They inspired me to write my response in a blog post (which answers one of the questions). I posted it on my site, http://t.co/q3IjuKQ – 3 Creative Ways I Come Up With Blog Posts.

Love what you write about here. I’m also a big fan (and USER!) of Standard Theme.

    • http://john.do John Saddington

thanks tim! your support means a lot to me!

    John,
Are you looking for post ideas? How about this: “How to maintain your blog while on vacation.”

Summer is coming up, and I don’t think my wife and kids would be too happy if I blog while on a trip. I know I can schedule blog posts in advance, but how do I let commenters know that I am not ignoring them? Just a blog post about me being gone? A comment forwarding page? How do you do it?

    • http://john.do John Saddington

i’m writing this down. let me think about it!
