2 Must-Have Apps that Increase the Performance on my Macbook Air

[tentblogger-vimeo 18821026]

As I’ve mentioned previously I am absolutely in love with my 13″ Macbook Air, and after 2 months of solid use it’s still doing an amazing job of keeping up with all of my needs as a Professional Blogger.

But since I’m a power-user with photos, videos, and a lot of software development as well I need a few apps to help manage the computing resources to make sure I’m optimal at all times.

The following 2 apps are absolutely essential for me and the results have been incredible:

AppTamer most simply “pauses” applications that you’re not actively using and reduces their CPU usage to zero thus giving the applications that you are currently using all the juice of the entire machine.

And when I mean “pause” I really mean “pause”! It can even “pause” an upload to Vimeo or a download in the middle and auto-resume when you come back to that browser and/or app! It’s really incredible and I feel like there’s only one application running at a time despite the fact that I have 20 or so running at the same time!

Life-saver app, for sure.

Watts is the next application that I have constantly running and it’s a recalibration and power-saving app that’s given my Macbook Air noticeably more juice.

There’s really nothing more to say about this one since it just works. For $6.95 it’s well worth the Quad-Grande Vanilla Latte from Starbucks.

Hope that helps!

May have to ad this to my Macbook Pro when I get it.

    Thanks John

How do you run watts if the apptamer app is running? Can you tell the latter to ignor the former?

    • John Saddington

of course! you can choose to ignore certain apps!

These apps look great! Now I just need a MacBook Air….

Also, from one Mac geek to another, I couldn’t help but notice your incorrect pronunciation of Mac OS X in the video. You pronounced it OS “ex” while the correct pronunciation is OS “ten” as outlined in this Apple KB article – http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22541

      Or should it be pronounced:

      Mac On Steve’s uniX

      … omg. thanks.

Cool. I bought I Mac Book Pro a few weeks ago. It was my firs mac computer and I am absolutely loving it. Now just looking for all the right tools.

I have been lusting over that macbook air 13″ since I watched them unveil it at the press conference.

This is going to be the piece of hardware that makes me convert over to mac.

Now just to make some money so I can justify the expenditure!

    • John Saddington

      hah! i’ll pray for you.

I had the Watts app from the giveaway a while ago, but I could never get it right, so I ended up pulling the plug on it.

But definitely checking out AppTamer, nice.

      word up.

This actually has nothing to do with the apps, which I think are great tips, but just curious what app you use to divide you docks into groups? Thanks and love the content, been on for a few weeks now and enjoy it.

    John,

Based on this recommendation, I downloaded both apps for my new 13.3 inch MacBook Pro. Like many, I do a considerable amount of work at the cafe, or waiting room, or whatever. Battery savings is a huge value. Thanks for this.

One question: I write a pretty small blog about design/business and periodically i like to supply resources and useful links. Would you be cool with me plugging both these apps? Just don’t want to look like a rip-off artist. I’d also like to link to your blog if that’s cool by you :)

    Cheers,
    Carson

I’m getting them both tomorrow along with iA writer. My 11″ Macbook Air is being delivered tomorrow morning!!! I’m about to explode with anticipation!

    • http://john.do John Saddington

      did you get it?

Wow I will have to check these out! Especially the first one. Ever since I got my mac i cannot edit any of my post from the word press site. Media, links…pretty much anything that requires a pop up doesn’t work. I edit it with my WPEdit

But it sure would be nice to edit from the site. Suggestions?

I’ve never owned a Mac, but am really looking into it. I am very uneducated about a Mac! I blog on google blogger, would that work on a Mac?
