Seth Godin: Get People to Talk About You and Your Good Work

Fill the space with incredible work.

As we close out this series on personal online branding I want to share with you some final words of advice from one of my favorite bloggers, Seth Godin.

Seth, as many of you know, is a marketer’s marketer and an incredibly consistent and powerful thought leader in the online space. He’s created a significant personal brand that is worth millions, literally. But more importantly, he’s challenging difficult-to-change cultures and markets and people are listening.

In a sentence he’s simply worth talking about. I think this is the key to personal online branding: Being remarkable enough for people to talk about and share with others. You see, it’s not enough to have a personal online brand – you must ultimately do something with it and attract people to your cause and your work.

In the end, this is perhaps the best thing that you can have happen instead of just a nice looking landing page:

People talking about you is far more effective than talking about yourself. – Seth Godin

I love that.

You see, it’s just human nature to be biased, to doubt, and to be anxious of other people who spend a lot of time talking about themselves. Those that manage this best spend their time not just talking but doing – doing great work that’s worthy enough of buzz, attention, and excitement.

In fact, those that do this really well don’t have to do much talking at all – other people talk about them instead.

If you want another great perspective take a look at Steve Martin‘s angle of approach: Be so good they can’t ignore you.

  • Mutant Minds

This is the whole concept behind the popular website – Angieslist.com.

Instead of companies bragging about themselves and making claims that some can not really do, people, the customer, get the opportunity to brag or complain about a company’s service. Basically, a company’s name, reputation, whatever, goes up and down according to what people are saying about them.

    And people pay for that!!!

Would be interesting to see a blog around this theme.

I know there are sites out there that rank blogs, but a lot of that is based off of traffic and other analytics.

But I am talking about a blog where people can actually talk about your blog. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Of course this could end up being a moderator’s nightmare, but I think with some rules, bans and other measures, it could be doable. Maybe. Maybe not.

It would have to have a secret panel of pro bloggers to moderate it; that way no one would know where to send their hate mail. :)

i think it’s pretty clear – have people talk about you and you can profit… people share the value!

If you say your own name, it sounds okay. But when someone talks to you and uses your name, I don’t care who you are…it makes you feel special!

      this is truth!
