You’ve probably seen these little links below search results linking to certain pages and blog posts of interest, typically ranked based on traffic and engagement.
I often get questions about how one goes about adding these to search results and the answer is quite simple: I didn’t, Google did…!
There’s no way to add these links below your search results nor is there anyway to stop Google from adding them either:
Sitelinks are links to other pages on your site that may appear under the search result for your site. Google generates these links automatically, and not all sites have sitelinks.
If you don’t want a page to appear as a sitelink, you can demote it. Google will take your request into account when generating sitelinks (although we don’t guarantee that a demoted page will not appear as a sitelink).
Sneaky! Managing them is as simple as heading to your Google Webmasters Tools options page.
As far as I’m concerned I actually like them since they push other content further down the page on SERPs and really call-out particular blog posts and pages that are some of the strongest results.
But, Google isn’t perfect and I’ve had to “demote” links historically, just like this morning:
I’ve had to demote this one because it was titled “Advert” for some reason and I wanted to boost some other results in it’s spot. Hopefully it’ll re-align correctly and show some better top results.
Don’t be scared when you try this, especially when you see the email pop in your inbox:
A few tips that might help your blog get some sexy sitelinks in search results:
- Sitelinks are made to be useful to users and if your blog architecture and design looks terrible and isn’t “obvious” to users there’s a good chance Google won’t add sitelinks to your blog either.
- Improving your internal linking structure is vitally important is cited as something that Google includes in it’s development of sitelinks.
- Have accurate, informative, and non-repetitive alt tags for your content and links.
Otherwise you just have to wait on the gods at Google to pick up your blog and give you some of those sitelinks! Better yet, don’t just wait around – create killer blog content every single day of every single week!
Go go go!
