Smashing Magazine Guest Post: WordPress as a Business

I had the pleasure of guest posting over at Smashing Magazine today covering a topic that is near and dear to my heart: WordPress!

It was a 4,000+ word post which highlights how some of the better known WordPress Theme Shops use a model of service and support to engage their existing audience as well as attract new clients and buyers.

Love for you to review the post and let me know your thoughts! If you have any questions just ask them via the comments and I’ll answer them all!

It was a pleasure writing for Smashing and I’ve already got a few other posts in line for them.

  • Erin

So exciting! I’ve only gone to Smashing for the free wallpaper but now I guess I’ll actually have to read something. :) Hope they send more writing gigs your way!

    • http://john.do John Saddington

hah! it’s a great blog – one of the best!

  • Dewitt Robinson

Great post John! Very exhaustive! It’s mind boggling, the fees, some of the themes charge for their support. Grateful, ST support is free. The community around the 8bit products is phenomenal. No, this isn’t about the article. But this is my takeaway after reading the post in Smashing Magazine….work with what works best for you.

    • http://john.do John Saddington

thanks dewitt for your constant support!

So random that I just came across that post a few minutes ago on Smashing Magazine. I haven’t visited their site in months and was happy to see a familiar name. Excellent article and give me a lot to think about for future projects. Thanks!

    • http://john.do John Saddington

awesome! thanks for your support jared!

  • Christopher Morris

I will definitely remember that article when I am buy a theme. That is if I don’t get standard :-)

    • http://john.do John Saddington

      ;) thanks chris!

  • http://calvinkoepke.wordpress.com Calvin Koepke

Holy cow, you put a ton of work into that post! I’ll definitely set aside some time to read the whole thing!

    • http://john.do John Saddington

      take your time, for sure!

  • Chris Langille

    Support and Community is everything.

As a newbie to WordPress, and themes shops, I found out the hard way that there are many ticket salesmen in this business.

Once they sell you the ticket, they don’t care what happens next. They don’t care if the bus breaks down because they already made their money.

The pilot on the other hand, has a vested interest in getting you to your destination. The pilot is right there with you during your journey. That is why I use your product(s). Because 8BIT is the pilot.

That may sound corny, but it’s so true. Great article man!

    • Dewitt Robinson

      Seriously.

    • http://john.do John Saddington

      chris,

i love this. thanks man. and the pilot metaphor is dead-on.

      • Chris Langille

        No doubt man!!

    • http://8bit.io Tom McFarlin

      Thanks for the comments, Chris.

This is *exactly* what we’re aiming for and are glad to know it’s coming through :).

      • http://john.do John Saddington

it’s good to note that tom leads the charge here too. ;)

        • Chris Langille

Definitely! Big ups to Michael Novotny too!

      • Chris Langille

It’s definitely coming through. I’ve used several different theme shops (actually asked for my money back from one of them) and none of them compare in any way to the support behind your products. That’s not me being a fanboy. That’s me telling an unbiased truth.

I know nothing about coding. At all.

The fact that I have built and altered several websites solely with the help of you guys and the 8BIT forums is incredible really.

    • http://chrisam.es Chris

      Chris:

Thanks for the compliments! I could not agree more. Every member of the support team has contributed code to our products. We take full ownership of our work, and then some. I wrote a little about that here: http://bit.ly/iHLfUt

You’ll have to swim through the good natured ribbing to get to it. Lampooning John is sort of a hobby of mine.

      • http://john.do John Saddington

        … pssh.

      • Chris Langille

Yeah I read this post too…good stuff man!! You guys rock

  • http://Benrwoodard.com Ben

If you haven’t read the entire article and comments…DO IT! It’s all about a good mindset in dealing with ‘customers” online. Great stuff!

    • http://john.do John Saddington

thanks ben for your support bro!

  • ThatGuyKC
