Even the best businesses within your industry can be described as a farm at times – rote work with the intention of pleasing those that don’t need to be pleased.
The challenge to keep it from becoming a full-fledged producer of crops is to simply one of agility and invention. I particularly like the latter. From my experience the best inventions comes from engineers and thank God we have one.
Tom, our chief engineer, is our inventor and by nature keeps us agile. We’ll never be too close to producing products that only please stakeholders and at the same time not too distant from the real problems that our products solve.
Although, in our case, Tom just so happens to moonlight as a self-employed farmer as well (I’m not sure exactly what his “crop” is though). Who would have thought?
