Here’s a great post covering 7 different types of freemium and a break-down of how they can often be implemented.
I don’t mind overviews like this but I always caution developers and business owners to feel free to liberally experiment with their own model as not all models are meant to be perfect fits.
In other words, there are so many other things that will control the success rate of your pricing and how it will be received in the market. Of course, there are some who experiment with freemium and it fails.
You should, of course, after this debacle, iterate and pivot your pricing back to something that works and feel good about it. One of the hardest things to cope with as a indie developer is the challenge of feeling that you don’t have it “quite right” and that others are doing it better than you.
The reality is that they are as confused as you are and as just as anxious and concerned about their own success. Consequently, we have a full-circle of developers and business owners who are trying to learn from each other, assuming that there is a model for all of this when there isn’t one!
Choose for yourself, iterate, experiment, and then call it a day.
