Irreverent

The word irreverent (or irreverence) is one of my favorite words in the english language, mostly because I think more of us should show more irreverence for more things in our lives.

In other words, I think we take ourselves way too seriously on way too many things. Sometimes, it’s just better to make fun of ourselves, and, at times, poke light fun at things that are clearly ridiculous.

One of my favorite pieces of content, ever, is this this one with Julien Smith and Chase Jarvis on “How to Not Give a Fuck” — why? Because:

FACT NUMBER 1. People are judging you right now.
FACT NUMBER 2. You don’t need everyone to like you.
FACT NUMBER 3. It’s YOUR people that matter.
FACT NUMBER 4. Those who don’t give a f#$% change the world. The rest do not.

LOL. Take a look:

I remember when I first saw this video (strangely, I can’t seem to find the original or it’s not pulling up) and it really impacted my thinking. I remember feeling less pressure to be someone that I wasn’t and that made a huge difference at that time.

I really appreciated it and I’ve made it a bit of a habit to challenge things in life that get a little bit more attention than they deserve, for whatever reason. Bringing a bit more irreverence to the situation can sometimes not only lighten the mood but open up folks to consider a different perspective, sometimes.

And that’s a good thing.
